Why is Medical Interpretation Important?
Medical interpretation is a crucial service throughout the healthcare industry, from hospitals, outpatient or ambulatory health centers, and assisted living communities/nursing care centers to physicians’ offices, mental health clinics, and rehabilitation centers.
Executive Order 13166, "Improving Access to Services for Persons with Limited English Proficiency,” which was signed in 2000, requires federal agencies to ensure that individuals with limited English proficiency (LEP) have access to services. This means that healthcare providers are expected to make interpreter services available to LEP patients.
Beyond the legal necessity in the United States, medical interpreters are essential because they assist in facilitating effective communication between a healthcare professional and patients who do not share a common language. This is especially important for people dealing with severe illnesses who need to understand their diagnosis and treatment options.
Communication barriers in healthcare can be unsafe and potentially life-threatening, as patients may be affected by factors such as “aggression, hindrance of care, lack of informed consent, avoidance of the healthcare system.” With the assistance of interpreters, however, patients are more satisfied, resulting in more beneficial healthcare outcomes.
Medical interpreters do more than just interpret the language. They also act as a cultural bridge between medical professionals and patients, leading to better understanding and cooperation between both parties. Patients usually prefer using professional interpreters vs. bilingual family members and friends.
